While Jack Daniel’s is renowned primarily for its classic Old No. 7 Tennessee whiskey, the esteemed distillery has garnered considerable attention in recent years for introducing a variety of intriguing expressions. The newest addition to this collection is the Distillery Series selection #11,  a Tennessee whiskey that has undergone a unique finishing process in tequila barrels.

The Distillery Series selection #11 takes this distinctiveness to another level by being aged for at least four years in new charred American white oak barrels before being transferred to barrels previously used to mature añejo tequila for an additional one year and seven months. This final ageing process adds a layer of complexity and character to the expression, making it an exceptional tasting experience.

The latest offering in their limited-edition Distillery Series starts with the classic Jack whiskey aged in fresh charred American white oak barrels for a minimum of four years. The aging process is then enhanced by transferring the whiskey to barrels previously used to age añejo tequila for a period of one year and seven months.

Typically, the Distillery Series bottles are sold at Jack’s distillery in Lynchburg and a handful of specialty shops in Tennessee. These bottles, sized at 375 ml instead of the usual 750 ml, are produced in limited quantities, mirroring the availability of other unique Jack Daniel’s releases such as the Straight Tennessee Whiskey Finished with Toasted Pecan Wood Chips and Toasted Maple Barrel Finished Rye.

“As one of the most complete distilleries in the world, we’re fortunate to have the ability to experiment with every part of the whiskey making process, and that’s what our Distillery Series is all about,” said Chris Fletcher, Jack Daniel’s master distiller, in a statement. “This añejo tequila barrel-finished whiskey pushes the bounds on what people may expect out of a Tennessee whiskey, yet still has the familiar characteristics that are uniquely Jack Daniel’s.”

The decision to finish Jack Daniel’s Distillery Series selection #11 in tequila barrels was a deliberate choice made to elevate the whiskey’s flavour profile. Through this unique process, the addition of tequila barrels contributes to the already existing notes of agave and oak, making them even more pronounced and distinctive. You can also expect to be greeted by delightful aromas of sweet citrus that mingle harmoniously with the gentle essence of oak.

This combination creates an inviting olfactory experience that sets the stage for what’s to come. Upon taking the first sip, the palate is treated to a symphony of flavours. The inherent richness of brown sugar and the complex allure of dried spices tantalize the taste buds, transporting the drinker to a realm of sensory delight. However, what sets this expression apart is the subtle yet noticeable influence of añejo tequila, which adds a layer of depth and uniqueness to the overall flavour profile. To bring this exceptional tasting experience to a close, the finish of Jack Daniel’s Distillery Series selection #11 leaves a lingering sweetness that embodies the unmistakable essence of a classic Tennessee whiskey. It is a testament to the craftsmanship and attention to detail that is synonymous with the Jack Daniel’s name.
