An unparalleled fusion of cultural artistry and cutting-edge craftsmanship, the Phantom Arabesque redefines what a luxury car can be.

The Rolls-Royce Phantom is synonymous with ultimate luxury, but the Phantom Arabesque pushes the envelope, transforming the flagship sedan into a moving canvas. Commissioned through the Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Private Office in Dubai—one of only five invitation-only design hubs worldwide—this bespoke vehicle embodies the elegance of Middle Eastern architectural heritage through a groundbreaking laser-engraving technique.
The Phantom Arabesque’s signature pattern draws inspiration from mashrabiya, the intricate latticework seen in Islamic and Middle Eastern architecture. Traditionally, mashrabiya serves functional and aesthetic purposes, providing privacy, controlling airflow, and casting delicate light patterns. “Our goal was to reinterpret these qualities in a way that feels culturally authentic yet distinctly Rolls-Royce,” said Michelle Lusby, lead designer of the Dubai office. The result is a black-and-white geometric motif that is as much a tribute to heritage as it is a statement of innovation.

Creating this visual masterpiece required a revolutionary process. The Phantom Arabesque features the world’s first fully laser-engraved hood, inspired by the Italian sgraffito technique. The process involved multiple steps:
- Base Layers – The hood was first painted black and sealed under several clear coats.
- Topcoat Application – A silver top layer was added to create a contrasting surface.
- Laser Engraving – The mashrabiya motif was engraved to a depth of 145–190 microns, revealing the darker base and producing a subtle 3D effect.
- Finishing Touches – Each engraved section was meticulously hand-sanded to ensure a smooth, sculptural finish.
Unlike decals or paint-on-top methods, engraving directly into the paint ensures durability and precision. Rolls-Royce claims that this patented technique opens entirely new creative possibilities for future bespoke commissions.

The Phantom Arabesque isn’t just about its striking exterior. The cabin reflects the same level of artistry and attention to detail:
- Dashboard Marquetry – Blackwood and Black Bolivar veneer stretches across the dashboard, creating visual continuity with the exterior motif.
- Leather Appointments – Selby Grey and Black leathers are complemented by Black seat piping and embroidered mashrabiya motifs on headrests.
- Starlight Headliner and Doors – Thousands of fiber-optic lights embedded in the ceiling and door panels evoke a starry night, trimmed with contrasting piping and stitching.
- Illuminated Treadplates – Each door sill features a cross-section of the bonnet’s engraving, merging functional luxury with artistic expression.

Tobias Sicheneder, general manager of Rolls-Royce’s exterior surface center, explained, “Laser engraving allows us to create a surface that is both technically precise and visually alive. Developing this process took years of experimentation and collaboration across multiple departments. The Phantom Arabesque represents the first realization of a technique that will inspire many future commissions.”

With the Phantom Arabesque, Rolls-Royce has not only honored a centuries-old design tradition but also redefined what is possible in luxury automotive artistry. The car stands as a testament to the brand’s ability to fuse heritage, innovation, and personalization into a single, moving masterpiece.
