As the new flagship in Ferrari’s lineup, the 849 Testarossa is instantly one of the most desirable production cars on the planet. But beyond its staggering performance, the Maranello marque has resurrected one of its most legendary nameplates, ensuring this new machine will be remembered as both a modern marvel and a tribute to Ferrari’s storied past.

The “Testa Rossa” moniker first appeared in 1956, referring to the red-painted cam covers on the Ferrari 500 TR’s 2.0-liter four-cylinder. It later adorned the 250 Testa Rossa, cementing itself in Ferrari lore. But for most enthusiasts, the name conjures images of the 1984 Testarossa, a bold wedge-shaped icon that defined supercar styling for an entire generation.

Andrea Modena, Head of Ferrari Classiche, once explained the significance of that model: “The Ferrari Testarossa was a very important model for Ferrari. Known for its dramatic styling and now-signature strakes, it also featured technical innovations such as four valves per cylinder—the first time for a twelve-cylinder Ferrari road car. Its fame grew even further thanks to appearances in major films and shows, especially in the United States.”

The 849 Testarossa draws inspiration from its famous ancestor while embracing modern aerodynamics. Its sharp, wedge-shaped nose recalls the ‘80s icon, though the side strakes are absent. Instead, the horizontal fascia linking the headlights echoes Ferrari’s newer designs, including the 12Cilindri and F80.

Ferrari describes the look as an interplay of vertical and transverse lines inspired by 1970s sports prototypes. The dual tail design pays homage to the 512 S prototype while incorporating active aerodynamics. The sculpted doors add a new three-dimensional effect never before seen on a production Ferrari.

The aerodynamics are more than skin deep: at 155 mph, the 849 generates 915 pounds of downforce—55 more than the SF90 Stradale. Active elements, including a movable rear spoiler and optimized airflow channels, improve both stability and cooling efficiency by 15 percent compared to the SF90.

At its core, the 849 Testarossa is the most powerful series-production Ferrari to date. Its hybrid system builds on the SF90 Stradale’s platform, but with significant upgrades. The redesigned twin-turbo V8 now delivers 819 hp and 621 lb-ft of torque on its own. Paired with three electric motors—two up front and one between the V8 and the eight-speed dual-clutch transmission—the combined output reaches a jaw-dropping 1,035 hp.

The numbers are equally astonishing: 0-62 mph in just 2.2 seconds, with a top speed beyond 205 mph. For open-air enthusiasts, the 849 Testarossa Spider offers nearly identical performance with the convenience of a retractable hardtop, which deploys in 14 seconds at speeds up to 28 mph.

The cabin blends tradition with modern technology. A new steering wheel features mechanical buttons, including the iconic red start switch, paired with Ferrari’s advanced Human-Machine Interface system. Driver assistance features such as Adaptive Cruise Control and Blind Spot Detection come standard.

Interior ergonomics have also been improved, with slimmer door panels creating more space for passengers. Buyers can choose between sculpted comfort seats or lightweight carbon-fiber racing seats.

Ferrari also offers the Assetto Fiorano package, a track-focused upgrade available on both coupe and Spider. This option cuts about 66 pounds with extensive carbon-fiber use, introduces carbon wheels, and adds larger aerodynamic flicks with extra vortex generators. Stiffer Multimatic dampers enhance control at the limit, making the most of the Testarossa’s immense power.

Pricing has yet to be announced, but first deliveries are expected in mid-2026, with the Spider following soon after. What’s certain is that the Ferrari 849 Testarossa is more than just the most powerful production Ferrari—it’s a rolling tribute to one of the brand’s most celebrated eras, reimagined for the future.
