The New Tudor Ranger Celebrates the Spirit of Adventure

This Tudor Ranger is the perfect rugged adventure watch on your wrist for your next journey off the grid.

The 2022 Tudor Ranger

Swiss watchmaker Tudor is back with a new take on the Ranger to mark. The brand introduced a modern day explorer watch in homage to a British Expedition to North Greenland in 1952 that used Tudor Prince timekeepers as part of their vital equipment in some of the most hostile conditions on earth.

The early Tudor Ranger series were simply a fusion of the Oyster and Oyster Prince lines, with a very “Explorer-like” dial and a similar pioneer/expedition idea. In 1952, British North Greenland Expedition was launched and the Tudor watches were issued to the members of the expedition.

While the new Ranger ref. 79950 doesn’t blaze new Tudor territory, it does re-establish the simple, straightforward, and endlessly robust steel sports watch in their lineup. And it’s yet another high-profile field watch with enthusiast chops, a strong value statement, and a vintage-derived aesthetic.

J.D. Walker, captain in the British Royal Engineers reported from the 1952-53 expedition that the Tudor Prince watches maintained “remarkable accuracy”, and the extreme conditions experienced on the voyage provided lessons for Tudor that have improved the reliability and indestructibility of their watches ever since.

The original Tudor Prince that returned from the British expedition to North Greenland and inspired the new Ranger.

Now, the brand reintroduced one of its most beloved vintage models: the classic Ranger, giving it a complete modernization. It’s that spirit of adventure that powers the 2022 Tudor Ranger, which also features a throwback-minded 39mm case diameter.

The bezel-less design is retained with a deep black dial paired with contrasting cream white indices and numerals at 3, 6, 9 and 12 o’clock for a truly vintage look while keeping things highly legible, as a tool watch should be.

The design innovation keeps the watch running smoothly with even less variation in time throughout the day than required by international standards. Moreover, the Tudor Ranger has dialed in both precision and performance with the Manufacture Calibre MT5402, an automatic movement with a power reserve of a trusty 70 hours. Completing the look is either a stainless steel bracelet, a green striped fabric strap, or a hybrid rubber and leather strap in black with white stitching.
