Staying true to TAG Heuer’s sailing heritage, the latest Skipper model draws inspiration from the newly introduced ‘glass box‘ Carrera. This design is seamlessly adapted to craft an attractive and functional sailing watch.

The Skipper model, which originated from the Carrera chronograph, made its debut in the late 1960s under the Heuer brand. Originally designed with professional and amateur sailors in mind, this distinctive chronograph came in various iterations until 1983, when the final production model was introduced.

40 years later, TAG Heuer is now introducing the Carrera Skipper, a new generation Skipper watch derived from the recently launched ‘glass box’ Carrera model. This model will be included in the core collection and will also serve as the flagship for a series of upcoming maritime-inspired watches, signalling TAG Heuer’s return to the world of yachts and yachting.

The recently launched Tag Heuer Carrera Skipper continues the impressive legacy of the Tag Heuer Carrera. It represents a contemporary reinterpretation of a vintage timepiece that was originally crafted for the America’s Cup sailing vessel Intrepid, the 1967 champion.

The main dial of the watch showcases a circular brushed design in the iconic blue hue, complemented by distinct sub-dials that create a striking contrast. Of note is the 30-minute subdial, which has been specifically modified to count down the 15-minute pre-start of a regatta in three five-minute segments. These segments are differentiated by different colours, with Regatta Orange serving as a signal for the final five minutes, Lagoon Green representing the boat’s rigging colour, and Intrepid Teal mimicking the hue of the yacht’s deck.

The newly launched Skipper model boasts of acquiring the robust and elegant 39mm diameter casing of the Carrera watch, coupled with the latest TH20-06 movement that supports bi-directional winding. The watch is also powered by a battery that offers an impressive 80-hour power reserve, and to top it all off, a premium and long-lasting textile strap.

The iconic watch has inspired several other standout elements in the new design. Notably, the outer curved flange is adorned with prominent triangle-shaped markers placed at intervals of five minutes, adding a touch of distinction. Additionally, the watch features a vibrant orange central seconds hand for enhanced visibility. To further pay homage to its heritage, the name ‘Skipper’ is elegantly displayed at the base of the 12-hour counter, adorned in the recognizable Intrepid teal colour.

The hour and minute hands, along with the indexes, are coated with white Super-LumiNova, providing a green glow in the dark. The 39 mm stainless steel case features a dynamic design accentuated by alternating polished and satin-brushed surfaces.

The sapphire crystal extends from the dial’s edge to the case, giving it a full-diameter display. The watch’s overall thickness is 13.9 mm, mainly due to the glass, which is approximately 3 mm thick on its own.

While the crown is not screwed down, the watch maintains water resistance up to a pressure of 10 bar (100 meters / 330 feet).

The sapphire crystal case back reveals an enhanced version of TAG Heuer’s in-house automatic chronograph calibre, the Heuer 02, operating at 4 Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour).

The watch features a blue fabric strap secured to the wrist by a stainless-steel folding clasp with double safety pushbuttons. The retail price for the new TAG Heuer Carrera Skipper ref. CBS2213.FN6002 is CHF 6,600.
