Ruffino Riserva Ducale Oro: A Century of Chianti Excellence

Ruffino’s Riserva Ducale Oro, named after Italian royalty, has been a gold standard for Chianti for over a century, blending rich tradition with modern innovation. Celebrated globally, it embodies Tuscany’s finest winemaking legacy.

For over 100 years, Ruffino’s Riserva Ducale Oro has stood as a symbol of Italian winemaking excellence. Named after the Duke of Aosta, who in 1890 declared it fit only for royalty, this iconic wine has become the gold standard for Chianti, renowned for its rich history, impeccable quality, and timeless appeal.

Ruffino’s journey to the top of the wine world began with a visit from the Duke of Aosta in 1890. So impressed was the Duke by Ruffino’s Chianti that he reserved all future production for himself and the Italian Royal Family. This royal endorsement not only elevated Ruffino’s status but also set the stage for the creation of Riserva Ducale, a wine that would later become available to the public in 1927, celebrating the winery’s 50th anniversary.

The Riserva Ducale was an instant success, but it was the 1947 vintage that gave birth to an even more illustrious version: Riserva Ducale Oro. With its signature gold label, this wine quickly became a legend in its own right, embodying the essence of Tuscany’s finest winemaking traditions.

Riserva Ducale Oro is more than just a wine; it’s a journey through Tuscany’s rich vineyards. Made from a blend of 80% Sangiovese and 20% Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and other complementary grapes, this wine hails from the select vineyards of Gretole and Santedame in the heart of Castellina in Chianti.

The tasting experience is nothing short of extraordinary. Expect to be greeted by intense cherry, plum, and violet notes on the nose, leading to a complex bouquet with hints of eucalyptus, chocolate, and black pepper. The wine’s strong structure is balanced by elegant tannins, good acidity, and a finish marked by sweet tobacco, balsamic notes, and plum. It’s no wonder that one out of every three bottles of Chianti Classico Gran Selezione opened worldwide is Riserva Ducale Oro.

Ruffino recently celebrated the enduring legacy of Riserva Ducale Oro with the ORObyRUFFINO exhibition and party during Milan Design Week. The event, held at Dazi Milano in Piazza Sempione, was a testament to the wine’s prestige, featuring golden works of art by renowned contemporary artists. From Filippo Caradini’s golden mirrored cabinet to Ettore Marinelli’s Dionysius sculpture “Oro Fuso,” the exhibition highlighted the blend of tradition and modernity that defines Ruffino’s approach.

Beyond the celebration of Riserva Ducale Oro, Ruffino has embraced innovation in other areas as well. The Poggio Casciano Estate, with its restaurant, boutique hotel, and wine bar, has transformed Tuscan ecotourism, offering a contemporary experience rooted in tradition. The company’s commitment to sustainable winemaking practices is evident in its certified organic vineyards, ensuring that future generations can continue to enjoy the fruits of Tuscany.

Ruffino’s legacy is one of mindful, sustainable practices that set the gold standard in winemaking. From the first Chianti exported to the USA to the present day, the brand has remained a global ambassador for Tuscan wines. With estates like Montemasso, boasting views of Florence and centuries of history, Ruffino continues to be a custodian of Tuscany’s rich heritage.

As Sandro Sartor, President and CEO of Ruffino, remarked at the Milan event, “Ruffino is writing an exciting new chapter in its history… Now, like then, the protagonist of this change is Riserva Ducale Oro.” Indeed, this iconic wine not only honours its past but also serves as a bridge between tradition and innovation, ensuring that Ruffino remains at the pinnacle of Chianti’s excellence for generations to come.
