A Rolex Daytona reborn with fire-red rubies and dazzling diamonds.
Artisans de Genève delivers a $555,000 masterpiece for one discerning client.

When it comes to Rolex, scarcity already fuels desire. But when independent customization house Artisans de Genève takes the Daytona—the crown jewel of sports chronographs—and rebuilds it with rare gems, white gold, and skeletonized movement, the result is something beyond exclusive. Enter the Ruby Rolex Daytona, a one-of-one creation destined for the wrist of a mystery collector with a passion for the color red.
At the heart of this exceptional watch is the white gold Rolex Daytona ref. 116509. Artisans de Genève, known for transforming iconic timepieces into singular works of horological art, has taken that foundation and pushed it into rarified territory. The bezel alone is set with 36 loupe-clean, “pigeon blood” natural rubies—stones so vibrant and pure they’re among the rarest on earth.

That detail alone would elevate the watch into collector’s heaven, but the Geneva-based atelier went further. Surrounding the case are 52 brilliant-cut diamonds, a shimmering counterpoint to the red stones. The dial, meanwhile, breaks entirely new ground: a full red sapphire face, the first of its kind crafted by Artisans de Genève. It’s bold, radiant, and entirely in keeping with the client’s brief for a watch that embodied his favorite color.
Beyond its dazzling surface, the Ruby Daytona has been engineered with the same obsessive precision that defines the Rolex name. The hands and rotor are machined from solid white gold, while the oscillating weight carries a red enamel motif—chosen to symbolize eternity. Each component tells part of the story, marrying symbolism with artisanal expertise.

The movement itself is another departure. The Daytona traditionally houses Rolex’s famed Caliber 4130, but here, Artisans de Genève skeletonized the caliber by hand, reshaping it into the Caliber 4139. This not only gives the wearer a view into the beating mechanical heart but also underscores how this Daytona is unlike any other in existence.

Artisans de Genève is discreet about its clientele, but it revealed that the commissioner of the Ruby Daytona is a man of “highly demanding tastes.” In his own words, he wanted a timepiece that reflected his love of red: “I asked for the best, from stones and settings to the most complex techniques, without compromising on understated elegance.”
That emphasis on refinement is important. Despite the half-million-dollar price tag and the glittering stones, the watch avoids garishness. Its balance of color, precious materials, and open-worked mechanics speaks more to elegance than extravagance—a true reflection of the atelier’s design philosophy.

Working with rubies is no simple task. Artisans de Genève has stated that setting them into the Daytona bezel required overcoming significant technical hurdles. The hardness of the stones and the precision demanded by Rolex’s specifications left no margin for error. At the same time, creating a red sapphire dial—another first—tested the limits of both design and manufacturing.
For the artisans, however, these challenges are the point. Their atelier doesn’t belong to Rolex or any other brand. Instead, it exists as a bridge between client vision and horological mastery, reinterpreting iconic watches into singular expressions of personal taste.

At $555,000, this ruby-studded Daytona is less an accessory and more a wearable sculpture. It embodies what happens when legendary Swiss craftsmanship, avant-garde creativity, and the passions of a private collector converge.
Though only one individual will ever own this Ruby Daytona, its existence tells a larger story about watchmaking’s capacity for reinvention. Even a model as revered and established as the Rolex Daytona can be reimagined into something unprecedented when entrusted to the right hands.
In the world of horology, where tradition often outweighs experimentation, Artisans de Genève continues to prove that watches can be both timeless and completely new.
