Jacob & Co. has never been a brand for the discreet. Known for turning wristwatches into stages where miniature worlds come alive, the New York maison has built a reputation on audacity. From timepieces featuring working oil derricks to creations inspired by Bugatti hypercars, fine cigars, and even the cult classic Scarface, the brand thrives on excess. Among its many themes, one mythical creature has repeatedly returned to the forefront: the dragon.

For 2025, Jacob & Co. breathes new fire into that fascination with the launch of the Astronomia Solar Dragon, a pair of limited-edition watches that scale down in size but not in spectacle. Available in black DLC titanium and 18K rose gold, these new releases extend the brand’s dragon collection while introducing subtle refinements that collectors will instantly notice.

The Astronomia Dragon first roared onto the scene in a massive 50mm case. While certainly dramatic, its size placed it firmly in the category of statement-only pieces. The new Astronomia Solar Dragon trims the proportions to a more wearable 44mm, while preserving the line’s signature theatrics. It’s a rare moment of restraint from Jacob & Co., though “restraint” is relative here.

Encased under a double-curved, anti-reflective sapphire crystal and caseband, the star attraction is obvious: a meticulously sculpted rose gold dragon, coiled around the Astronomia Solar movement in a frozen dance of power and menace. Thanks to the sapphire construction, the beast can be admired from virtually any angle, making the entire watch feel like a three-dimensional diorama strapped to the wrist.

Creating the dragon is no small feat. Each sculpture is cast from three solid pieces of rose gold and then finished by master engravers who spend two weeks carving scales, claws, and facial details. Once the engraving is complete, the dragon undergoes an additional week of hand-painting, bringing depth and life to its already intricate form.

The rose gold Astronomia Solar Dragon is offered in four unique colorways, each limited to a single piece. Meanwhile, the black DLC titanium version features a menacing glossy black dragon and is limited to 36 pieces. Both variations ensure exclusivity, but the ultra-limited rose gold edition is destined to become a collector’s holy grail.

At the heart of the Astronomia Solar Dragon lies the JCAM42 caliber, a hand-wound mechanical movement comprised of 296 components. Many of these are crafted from titanium to reduce weight while maximizing durability. Unlike typical Astronomia models where the movement rotates, here it remains static, providing a stable stage for the coiled dragon. Incredibly, sections of the dragon’s body pass within half a millimeter of the movement, demonstrating Jacob & Co.’s precision engineering.

The watch’s technical highlights include a flying tourbillon, a skeletonized hours-and-minutes dial, and a miniature rotating globe representing Earth. At the very center lies a dazzling Jacob-cut gemstone with 288 facets, twinkling like a star within the universe of the dial. Each edition pairs the gemstone’s color with its case: red for the black DLC titanium model and yellow for the rose gold version.

The attention to detail extends to the back dial, crafted from blue titanium and decorated with a gold-printed sky chart. In the rose gold model, this cosmic tableau is paired with a rich blue alligator leather strap and an 18K rose gold pin buckle. The black DLC titanium edition, by contrast, opts for a black alligator strap secured with a matching DLC titanium buckle. Both variations continue Jacob & Co.’s tradition of pairing horological spectacle with luxurious finishing touches.

For those fortunate enough to acquire one, the Astronomia Solar Dragon represents more than a timepiece—it is an objet d’art, a conversation starter, and a wearable universe. With a price tag of $420,000, it is unapologetically extravagant, but then, understatement has never been part of Jacob & Co.’s DNA.

Availability is strictly limited: 36 pieces in black DLC titanium and an almost mythical four pieces in rose gold. For collectors already enamored with Jacob & Co.’s bold design language, this dragon will be impossible to resist.

The Astronomia Solar Dragon doesn’t just tell time—it tells a story. A story of mythical beasts reimagined in gold and enamel, of artisans devoting weeks to microscopic detail, and of a brand unafraid to push the boundaries of watchmaking into the realm of fantasy. On the wrist, it is less an accessory and more a declaration: that sometimes, excess is the ultimate expression of art.
