The record-setting performance machine receives a bold red, white, and blue makeover inspired by one of America’s greatest speed legends.

As the high-performance world continues to obsess over European supercars and track-focused hypercars, Ford Motor Company is reminding everyone that American engineering can still dominate the conversation. The latest proof comes in the form of the new Ford Mustang GTD Spirit of America edition, a patriotic special model designed to celebrate the United States’ upcoming 250th anniversary while highlighting one of the most ambitious Mustangs ever built.
The release arrives at the perfect moment. Over the last few years, the Mustang GTD has transformed from a bold concept into a genuine global performance threat, earning respect far beyond Detroit thanks to increasingly impressive results at Germany’s legendary Nürburgring circuit. Now, Ford is pairing that international credibility with a distinctly American identity.
The Spirit of America name carries significant historical weight. Rather than serving as a simple patriotic slogan, it references the groundbreaking achievements of legendary land speed racer Craig Breedlove. During the 1960s, Breedlove became the first person to surpass both 500 and 600 miles per hour on land using jet-powered vehicles known as Spirit of America. His futuristic machines helped define an era when speed records symbolized technological ambition and national pride.

Ford channels that legacy into the Mustang GTD through a dramatic new exterior treatment. The car’s Performance White paint provides the foundation for a striking asymmetrical livery that immediately separates it from other GTD models. Bold Race Red and Lightning Blue stripes run across the body, but instead of following a symmetrical layout, the graphics are intentionally offset.
A thick blue stripe dominates the right side of the car while a thinner red accent runs along the left, with an additional blue stripe cutting through the center. The unconventional arrangement draws attention to the GTD’s aggressive carbon-fiber-heavy design, emphasizing aerodynamic elements like the front splitter, side skirts, and towering rear wing.
Exposed carbon fiber remains a defining visual feature throughout the car, reinforcing the GTD’s race-bred philosophy. Even the rear wing proudly highlights the Mustang name, blending heritage with modern motorsport aesthetics.
The special-edition package also includes lightweight Forgeline wheels and Ford’s available Performance Package, which introduces several premium details designed to enhance both aesthetics and performance. Among the standout touches are 3D-printed titanium interior accents that further elevate the GTD’s supercar ambitions.

Of course, the styling is only part of the story. Underneath the patriotic paintwork lies one of the most powerful production Mustangs ever created. The GTD is powered by a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 generating an astonishing 815 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque — the highest factory output Ford has ever offered in a road-going vehicle.
That immense power allows the Mustang GTD to reach a top speed of 202 mph, placing it firmly in territory traditionally occupied by exotic European machines. Yet what truly elevated the GTD into international headlines was not straight-line performance, but its unexpected success at the Nürburgring.
Known as the “Green Hell,” the Nürburgring is widely regarded as one of the most demanding racing circuits in the world. Automakers use it as the ultimate proving ground for chassis balance, braking performance, and aerodynamic capability. For decades, American performance cars struggled to compete seriously against European rivals on the circuit.
That changed dramatically in 2024 when the Mustang GTD became the first American production car to break the seven-minute barrier around the track. The achievement immediately repositioned the Mustang in global performance conversations and demonstrated how far American engineering had evolved.

Ford did not stop there. In 2025, the GTD returned to the Nürburgring and posted an even faster lap time, continuing to refine its capabilities. Then came the even more extreme GTD Competition variant in 2026.
That version featured additional aerodynamic enhancements, including revised dive planes and rear wing modifications, as well as lightweight magnesium wheels, carbon-fiber racing seats, and updates to the suspension system. While Ford has not disclosed the Competition model’s exact power increase, the upgrades helped the car become the fastest American machine around the Nürburgring once again.
Its lap time placed it sixth overall in the track’s highly competitive Pre-Production and Prototype category — an extraordinary accomplishment for a Mustang-based platform.
There is, however, one important detail: the Nürburgring-spec Competition car is not currently street legal in its exact form. Still, Ford has confirmed that a production version inspired by that track-focused model is on the way, giving enthusiasts even more reason to pay attention to the GTD program.

For now, the Spirit of America edition serves as both a celebration and a statement. It honors the country’s automotive and speed-record heritage while proving that American performance cars are capable of competing at the highest level globally.
At a time when electrification dominates much of the automotive industry, the Mustang GTD unapologetically embraces excess: massive horsepower, loud supercharged V8 power, extreme aerodynamics, and unmistakable presence. The Spirit of America package simply adds another layer to that identity, wrapping one of Ford’s boldest creations in a design that proudly embraces its roots.
For enthusiasts who grew up believing Mustangs belonged alongside the world’s greatest performance machines, the GTD may finally be the car that proves it.
